Countertransference refers to the therapist's own emotional reactions to the client that influence the therapy. These reactions stem from the therapist’s own experiences, unresolved issues, or personal dynamics and can color how the therapist interprets the client's words, what they notice or miss in the session, and the kinds of interventions they choose. This can either deepen empathy and attunement or lead to biased judgments, boundary slips, or reactive, non-impartial responses that move the session away from the client’s needs. Recognizing and managing countertransference through supervision, reflective practice, and personal work helps keep the focus on the client and preserves the effectiveness of the therapeutic process. By contrast, transference involves the client projecting feelings onto the therapist, cognitive distortions are the client’s faulty thinking patterns, and reinforcement refers to learning processes used to shape behavior—none of these describe the therapist’s internal reactions in the therapeutic relationship.
